Duct Cleaning: Could Your Duct Work be Giving you a Headache?

Duct cleaning improves indoor air quality and optimizes the meaning of a clean home. According to the National Headache Foundation (HNF), the first week in June is Headache Awareness Week. The NHF and indoor air professionals are advising consumers on the relationship between poor indoor air quality and headache triggers.

According to the NHF and a report entitled Indoor Air Pollution, published by the American Lung Association and the Environmental Protection Agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Medical Association, the following are indoor air quality issues that can be major headache triggers:

Carbon Monoxide Exposure: Poor ventilation or an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system that is not working properly can cause dangerous levels of carbon monoxide to enter your home. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, nausea and fatigue. Since the deadly poison causes flu-like symptoms, people typically seek bed rest. Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odorless, and considered to be a quick and silent killer.

Second-hand Tobacco Smoke: Tobacco smoke contains a complex mixture of over 4000 chemicals, many of which are toxic. Second hand smoke leads to a number of health problems for those who are frequently exposed. Simply opening doors and windows to air out the home does not remove all of the dangerous carcinogens form the air. The best way to prevent problems from second-hand smoke is to not smoke at all. The second best prevention is to insist that smokers go outside, away from doors and windows.

Sick Building Syndrome: This is a common condition in office and apartment buildings where the residents share similar adverse symptoms that quickly disappear when they go outside. A contaminated HVAC system with dirty air ducts can be a contributor to this situation where one of the chief complaints is a headache.

HVAC inspections and air duct cleaning are recommended every year or two by indoor air professionals, to improve and maintain clean, healthy, indoor air quality.
